b) Best time for general activities

The best time for camping spans from September to June month. However, I still prefer the summer season. A moderate temperature, Ganga river in full mode, cool breezes, and a lush environment, everything will enhance your experience and create an unforgettable memory.

Furthermore, it is highly recommended to entirely avoid the monsoon season as it is considered the least favorable time for camping or engaging in any other activities in Uttarakhand.

b) White water rafting

If you seek an even greater rush of thrills and adrenaline compared to regular river rafting, consider venturing into white water rafting. While both activities share similarities, white water rafting is known for its heightened danger and exhilaration.

The benefits of white river rafting are almost the same as normal river rafting, but with few health benefits. Like –

c) Body Surfing/Floating 🏄🏾‍♂️

However, it’s crucial to note that when I mention ‘’trying body surfing during rafting’’, it should only be attempted in calm water. 

d) Kayaking and Canoeing 🛶

In Uttarakhand, you can explore the excitement of kayaking or canoeing, solo adventures that are equally enjoyable as rafting. Moreover, Uttarakhand provides a secure and tranquil environment for this daring yet thrilling water activity.

This activity is beneficial for health, like – improving cardiovascular fitness and increasing muscle strength. Besides this, it improves self-discipline and self-dependency.

Generally, the rafting route and Kayaking route are the same. That’s why, Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Ranikhet are some of the best places for kayaking.

e) Best time for water activities

Generally, summertime is the best and ideal time for water activities, which include rafting, body surfing, kayaking and so on. That means March to June is the preferred time.

But normally, September to June is the preferred or legal time for water activities. Because, except for the monsoon, any time is suitable for this.

Some places that offer amazing and otherworldly experiences are Valley of Flowers, Nainital Lake, Dodital Trek, Chopta and many more.

b) Wildlife Safari 🐘

Wanna explore wildlife and animal kingdoms from the comfort of your vehicle, then the Wildlife or simply the Jungle safari is the best option. Here, you will encounter some amazing animals, like tigers, elephants, etc.

The key advantages of undertaking this safari involve warding off fatigue, ensuring a secure environment amidst animals, and acquainting you with the daily routines of these fascinating creatures and so on.

In Jim Corbett National Park, you’ll encounter a significant number of Indian tigers, the highest among all national parks in India.

Here you can drive your way through while enjoying the view of nature and tigers. On the other hand, Rajai National Park is famous for its world-famous Elephants. Here, you can try an elephant safari or ride. 

Don’t worry, it is one of the most kid and family-friendly destinations and the animals are well-cared and trained. Besides these, both places have countless local and secret destinations to explore.

e) Best time

The best time for nature walks, zoo visits, and wildlife safaris in Uttarakhand is during the post-monsoon and winter seasons (from September to February). Post-monsoon provide lush greenery and vibrant landscapes, enhancing the charm of nature walks, while the winter months offer clearer visibility and comfortable conditions for wildlife safaris and zoo explorations.

4. Winter activities

a) Skiing ⛷️

It might surprise you, but Uttarakhand offers the exhilarating opportunity to indulge in skiing, a fantastic winter activity. The thrill and awe-inspiring adventure of gliding down the snowy slopes in skiing gear makes for an unforgettable experience.

Besides Skiing, you can enjoy snowboarding and any other winter or snow activity and add this lifelong experience to your bucket list.

However, there is only one place that has this facility and environment, – Auli. It is also considered the Ski capital of India. During winter, it gets covered with shiny snow, which looks fabulous and captivating.

b) Best time

The optimal and exclusive period for winter activities such as skiing in Uttarakhand is from November to February. During this time, Uttarakhand witnessed a substantial amount of snowfall, transforming Auli into a snowy paradise adorned with glistening snowflakes.

If you are a couple or duo, then I highly recommend you to try parasailing. Because, first it’s a two-man sport, second it is super fun and third it’s generally safer than other activities.

In this adventure, both of you will be tied behind a parachute or boat. As the boat moves forward, the parasail catches the wind and in the next second, both of you will be in the air. 

Pithoragarh, Doon Valley, Auli, and Naukuchiatal are some places that offer this amazing activity to its visitors.

b) Air Safari 🌍

India has recently introduced a Gyrocopter, a flying taxi capable of soaring through the skies at an altitude of 8000 feet.

c) Paragliding 🪂

Paragliding is still the most thrilling and adrenaline-rushed activity in Uttarakhand and maybe the whole world.

So, if you are an expert or have experience in this activity, then I highly recommend you to try this. Uttarakhand has proper spots, facilities and safety procedures to provide you with a secure and fun paragliding experience.

The adventure, views, experience and everything is top notch. And, the best places to try this activity are Rishikesh,  Mussoorie, Nainital,  Naukuchiatal and Dehradun. 

d) Hot Air Balloon Ride ♨️

One of the most famous air activities that you can try in Uttarakhand is the Hot air balloon ride. A very simple and tranquil activity, in which you stand on the basket and the hot air balloon starts in the air with a rope attached to it.

It is generally safe and provides a panoramic view of the surroundings and of Uttarakhand.

e) Best time

If you are planning these air activities, like paragliding, air safari, and hot air ballooning in Uttarakhand, then choose post-monsoon and pre-winter months – from September to November. This period offers clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and favorable weather conditions for these aerial adventures.

6. Mountain activities

a) Trekking/Hiking 🥾

If you are looking for some best places for hiking and trekking, then Uttarakhand has an abundance of these locations. It has an infinite number of hiking spots, and everyone is incredible and unique in their own way.

During your journey, you will encounter some amazing things, like – lakes, waterfalls, forests, wildlife, and top-notch sceneries. It also has numerous health benefits, both mental and physical.

In my opinion, the best places for trekking are Deoria taal, Tungnath etc. These places offer a unique and worthy reward at the end of the journey. For example, a lake, Shiva temple, snow and so on.

b) Mountain biking 🚵🏾‍♂️

Wanna ride through extreme nature and wildlife, then try mountain biking through the picturesque locations, dense forest and towering mountains of Uttarakhand.

Trails are divided into appropriate levels, and every single train is equally thrilling, fun, safe and sound. Some might give you the uniqueness of the Himalayas.

Some locations that have incredible ATV bike trails are Lal Tibba, Naini Lake, Old Mussoorie Road and Sunrise Point Sunderkhal.

c) Waterfall Trekking 💧

Uttarakhand has a lot of secret and hidden waterfalls. And, to discover them, you need to embark on a trek through dense forests, thrilling mountains, and incredible trails. This adventurous journey is called waterfall trekking.

The unique aspect is the reward, whereas other trekking affairs, picturesque and top-notch sceneries, and waterfall trekking reward you with both a charming waterfall and top-notch views. The water is always cool and fresh. You can even take a dip on the small ponds.

Some places for this unique adventure are Kunjapuri Temple Trail, Ram Jhula, Mahadev Trail and Valley of Flowers.

d) Best time

Generally, the optimal time for mountain activities is either summer or winter. These provide a suitable climate and temperature for these activities. Don’t forget nature and wildlife are in full force during this time.

7. Rock Climbing and Rappelling

a) Rock climbing 🪨

Uttarakhand offers amazing and breathtaking cliffs, edges and mountains, where you can quench your thirst for rock climbing but in a safe environment.

However, keep that in mind – rock climbing is a very dangerous and exhausting activity. So, make sure you are physically fit, have a personal guide, and pick a suitable time.

There are many destinations where you can try rock climbing, but some notable ones are Pithoragarh, Nainital, Rishikesh, Gangotri and Mussoorie.

b) Rappelling /Jumaring 🧗🏼

Besides rock climbing, if you want a more safe activity, then you should try Rappelling and jumaring. They are almost the same activities in which you are tied with a rope or device, and then you either descend or ascend the cliff.

It is best suited for families, couples and beginners. But, it offers the same thrill and fun as rock climbing.

Pithoragarh, Nainital, Rishikesh, Gangotri and Mussoorie are some of the places that have appropriate cliffs, and facilities for this exciting activity.

c) Wall Climbing 🧱

If rock climbing is too overwhelming for you or your kids, then wall climbing is simply the best alternative. Generally, it takes place in a closed and much safer environment, like in a building or something. Plus, you have a variety of walls with easy grabbable openings.

Moreover, you have a harness attached, so in case you fall, you won’t get hurt. The environment is also very joyful and vibrant. You might encounter a crowd just like you. So it’s also a good chance for socializing.

Rishikesh holds the top position when it comes to wall climbing in Uttarakhand, But, several other places offer the same experience, like Mussoorie, Haridwar, Pithoragarh etc.

d) Bungee Jumping or Reverse Bungee ➰

One of the most famous adventure activities in the world, where you can get the thrill of experiencing a free fall. You have to stand in a state, then jump from the cliff with a rope attached. Don’t worry it’s completely safe and every year thousands of tourists try this.

It might look dangerous or scary, but it’s generally a fun and safe activity if done properly. Just make sure you are healthy and mentally fit. Keep kids and old people away from this activity.

Now, Rishikesh, Dehradun and Mussoorie are the most famous places for this activity, which have amazing cliffs, a serene environment and appropriate travel agencies.

e) Cliff jumping 🧗‍♀️

Do you love diving in water from a medium height? If yes, then you should try cliff jumping. Luckily, Uttarakhand has many spots for this activity, thanks to the Ganga and other charming rivers.

Luckily, anyone can try this activity. Because it is not a very dangerous or exhausting activity, you will have proper gear and a safety jacket. 

Try to merge this activity with rafting. Like this, you can try a lot of water activities at the same time. And you won’t even have to pay extra.

f) Best time

If you have made up your mind to try these activities, then I will suggest the post-monsoon time, which is September to November. During this time the sky remains clear and bright, it is less likely to rain and you will encounter a crowd who arrive for the same activities.

  • Only strong-minded people should try these.
  • Don’t eat too much before these activities.
  • Follow you guide

7. Zip Line activities

a) Ziplining 🚡

If you want to adore the beauty of Uttarakhand while riding a cable car, then Zipline activity might be your dream activity.

It’s a very simple and laid-back activity. You and your group will climb on the cable car on one side of the cliff or first point, and then the rest will be done automatically. You just have to admire and capture the whole place in your mind and maybe on your camera until you reach your final point.

Like other activities, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie, and Pithoragarh are the best and most suitable places for this activity. I prefer pairing it up with other more thrilling activities, like camping, rafting etc.

b) Giant Swing 🎡

Giant swing, –  what type of image emerges in your mind by reading the name? It’s kind of similar to bungee jumping, but a lot different.

It is generally a two-person activity, where both of you sit in your respective seats. Then, you experience a free fall, followed by a giant pendulum motion. All of this will take place at a specific height.

So, YES! It is a thrilling ride and should only be done with proper care and supervision. However, many places in Uttarakhand offer a much more safe and secure experience, like Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie, Pithoragarh etc.

c) Sky Walk 🚶🏾‍♀️

Have you seen any videos or clips of people walking on a glass platform or bridge? YES!. Then my friend, this activity is known as the Skywalk and it is another famous and breathtaking activity of Uttarakhand.

You will have a platform to walk on, but still, your mind will play tricks on you, telling you that there is no platform and you can fall. But, this is real fun of this activity.

Surprisingly, there is no risk involved in this activity. So, anyone can walk on these platforms. You just have to be strong, and patient and believe in yourself.

Rishikesh has one of these skywalk facilities in India. Besides this, Mussoorie, Gartang Gali, Nelong Valley and Jad Ganga Valley are some other locations.

d)  Flying Fox 🦊

Wanna feel like a Superman soaring in the sky with its iconic position, then try Flying Fox. It is also a zipline activity, where you lie in a horizontal position, just like the superman. Then you will be attached to a harness covering your whole body and you will transverse or cross a valley in the same position.

In my opinion, It is another super fun activity, and even the kids can participate in it. Surprisingly, Rishikesh again is the best place for this activity, accompanied by Haridwar and Mussoorie.

e) Valley Crossing 🏞️

Then, we have this simple valley crossing. And, as its name suggests, it is nothing except crossing or traversing a valley using a rope or cable. You will be harnessed and your objective is simple – reaching the other side of the cliff, crossing a river or a normal ground.

It’s like a freefall but in an inclined position, from high ground to lower ground.

This activity is not as thrilling as others, so anyone can try this. Especially kids, and senior citizens. However, try to inform the guide or operator before sending them.

Again, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie and Pithoragarh are the hotspots for these types of exciting and thrilling activities.

f) Best time

Now, the best time to experience these activities is post-monsoon (September to November. This is also the peak time of tourism in Uttarakhand. A serene weather, a clear sky and especially no rainfall. All of this creates a perfect timing for zipline and other activities in Uttarakhand.

h) Tips

  • I prefer pairing them
  • Don’t try just one.
  • Don’t overeat before the ride.

8. Fun activities

a) Zorbing 🌐

Want to lock up in a giant ball and roll here and there or collide with each other, then try zorbing in Uttarakhand. While it might not match the heart-pounding thrills of some other activities, it offers a unique and incredibly enjoyable experience.

Anyone can try this activity, whether it is your family, kids or senior citizens. It is completely safe, secure and brunt proof.

And, the best places for this super fun activity are Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Kullu, Haridwar, Agra, Joshimath, Auli and Kasol.

b) Beach Volleyball 🏖️

Uttarakhand has some amazing mini beaches that might be as fun as a real beach, but can still provide a general idea and some beach activity.

So, if you are up for some beach volleyball, then turn to Uttarakhand. It has this amazing river Ganga, that creates some charming beaches and alluring surroundings.

Rishikesh is the prime destination for this sport, but there are some other places that you can visit, like Haridwar and Mussoorie.

c) Paintball 🔴

Have you ever experienced the thrill of shooting, similar to a video game? If not, give paintball a shot. Instead of real bullets, it uses colorful paintballs that you shoot at targets, creating a super fun and exciting activity.

The best places for this exciting activity are Rishikesh, Dehradun, Haridwar and Mussoorie. Plus, there you will encounter other fun activities, so make sure to give them a try.

d) Scad Jump 🤸

Do you love jumping jack and jumping activities, then try scad jump in Rishikesh. It is a giant platform, where you have to jump from a certain height and bounce back in the air. The experiment is really exciting and fun.

Rishikesh, Mussoorie, and Pithroagrh are some places that offer this activity.  But, try to pair these activities with other fun activities, like rafting, camping etc.

e) Best time

There is no best or most suitable time for these fun activities. Whenever you are suitable or fine, visit Uttarakhand and enjoy these activities. However, I will suggest that you avoid Monsoon. Because unexpected rains and cold temperatures will create a lot of hurdles and maybe you won’t be able to enjoy other activities.

  • Clothes according to season.

g) Tips

  • Check the rates of each activity.
  • Choose a place that has other fun activities.

9. How to reach Uttarakhand

a) By air 🛬

If you are opting for a plane ride, then you need to book a direct ticket to Dehradun – Jolly Grant Airport. It is the prime airport of the whole of Uttarakhand.

However, Uttarakhand does have other airports, but they are not the best option. Because, either they are military airports or they don’t have a well-connected network.

b) By Train🚂

The train is the second-best option to reach Uttarakhand. You have many options, like Rishikesh train station, Haridwar station, Dehradun station and so on. You just have to make sure which station is best suited for you or you can say which station has a direct train from your nearby railway station.

c) By Road🛣️

This is the best option to reach Uttarakhand and even I prefer this one. Uttarakhand has an amazing and well-linked road connection, which goes through every major city of nearby states, cities and even Uttarakhand cities.

From your nearby ISBT or state-level bus depot, you can book a direct bus to any city of Uttarakhand, like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun or any other. 

d) Then what

After reaching your designated airport, railway station or bus depot. You can either book a cab, catch a taxi or ride a bus to go further.
